At The Cross: Exploring Its Meaning and Power

Facilitators: Mark Kimbrough, Helena Middleton, Randy Smith

Meeting Dates: February 24-March 24

All are invited to participate in this church-wide study! Whether you’re new to Bible study or a longtime participant, this study will be a meaningful way to engage with scripture and prepare your heart for Easter.

This Lent explore the meaning and power of the cross with us. We will explore the scriptures, theories, and metaphors that are trying to understand what the cross means. Each week we'll look a different way the church has historically understood the meaning of the cross and the richness of scripture which paints many ways it can be understood. While no one theory of the cross is fully complete, they all provide us with aspects that deepen the significance of the cross and it's power in our life and world.

*note: inherently conversation of the cross includes violence. We believe the cross can be understood in ways that shows God supreme love and nonviolence through Jesus, however we are mindful that it can be sensitive for some.

Each week, we’ll gather for a light supper, explore the meaning of the cross, and then discuss what it means for us today. Facilitators will help lead the conversations as we reflect together on the powerful message of Christ’s final days. Dinner will be served starting at 6:00 PM. The study will begin at 6:30 PM.

**All materials will be supplied at no cost.

Matthew the Gospel of Promised Blessings

Tuesday (6 weeks), 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.; January 13 - Feb 17

Facilitator: Rev. Shelli Williams

The Gospel of Matthew portrays Jesus and his message as full of tender compassion and urgent warning. This six-part exploration of an enigmatic Gospel takes readers into the themes, topics, and tensions at the heart of Matthew's story about the life and work of Jesus. Chapters focus on blessing and comfort, judgment and retribution, the meaning of discipleship, Jesus’ vision for the Church and world, conflicts and complaints, and how the Gospel of Matthew speaks to believers today. The introduction into Matthew's gospel compliments well with our weekly sermon scripture which will go through the Gospel of Matthew.

Wesleyan Vile-tality: Reclaiming the Heart of Methodist Identity

Tuesday (6 weeks), 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.; January 13 - Feb 17

Facilitator: Julie Richards

Wesleyan Vile-tality calls us back to the roots of our identity. Centered on the moment John Wesley “submitted to be more vile" in spreading the love of God to all people, Ashley Boggan argues that Wesleyan vile-tality is at the core of who we are as Methodists. As rule-benders, rabble-rousers, and outcast-embracers, those early Methodists stood out and stood up. She traces how that original identity was lost as the predecessor denominations to The United Methodist Church grew and began to embrace respectability over “vile-tality.” In an accessible and engaging account of a fascinating history, these stories of our past call us to understand who we were, question who we are, and reclaim who we should be. This study will be a great lead up to Dr. Ashley Boggan coming as our 2026 Coen Conference speaker.

Foundry Gatherings

Once a year, Katy First United Methodist members and attenders gather for our annual Foundry Gathering. This gathering is designed to help train us as a church in areas of leadership, Wesleyan spiritual formation, and church mission/vision. Our next Foundry Gathering will be in August of 2026. However, you can still watch previous gathering videos below.

Materials and Video from Previous Foundry Gatherings

In August of 2024, our gathering focused  on our communal life together as we explored the topics of social holiness, social justice, reading scripture in community, and leading small groups. Though the event has concluded, all materials, notes, slides, and video recaps can be found on our Foundry website or on our Youtube Channel.
